Tuned in. Dialed out. Community first.
The people keeping your favorite Discord alive are exhausted, underpaid, or increasingly, not underpaid at all. As moderation goes professional, we have to ask what happens to a community when the labor of love comes with an invoice.
Some online spaces never got a goodbye — they just got quieter. An ode to the slow-fade forum, the etiquette of posting into near-silence, and why an official shutdown might be more brutal than the alternative.

Every niche community follows a predictable arc—rise, peak, slow fade. The brutal part? You rarely know you're at the top until you're already on the way down. Here's how to read the signals before the frequency starts dropping.
Forget the old-school 'prove you belong' gatekeeping. The new version is warmer, more elaborate, and honestly harder to get through. Mandatory reading lists, multi-step intros, cultural pop quizzes—welcome to the era of onboarding as a loyalty test.
Not every loud voice in your community is worth tuning into. Some of the most influential people in your niche aren't the ones with the biggest numbers—and learning to tell the difference might be the most valuable skill you develop as a community member.
